ST JAMES THE MAJOR – One of the early Christian martyrs, killed by King Herod of Agrippa. Patron saint of labourers. Symbol, pilgrim staff and book.

ST PETER – A fisherman. Martyred by being crucified upside down. Symbol, keys and book.

ST PAUL – Converted from Judaism on the road to Damascus. Author of thirteen epistles. Symbol, sword and book.
ST JOHN THE EVANGELIST – who was present at the crucifixion of Jesus. Died of old age. Symbol, chalice and dragon.

ST PHILIP – Died a violent death by being crucified upside down in Greece. Symbol, basket of loaves.
ST JAMES THE MINOR – became patriarch of Jerusalem. Author of the Epistle of James. Clubbed to death aged 96. Patron saint of hat makers. Symbol, a fuller’s staff.

ST MATTHEW – tax collector, one of the twelve apostles and author of the first book in the New Testament. Natural death. Patron saint of bankers. Symbol, a sword.
