ST LAWRENCE – martyred 258 AD by slow roasting over a gridiron, during which he apparently joked, “It is well done. Turn me over!”.

ST MICHAEL – An archangel in Jewish, Christian and Islamic teachings. patron of grocers, mariners, paratroopers, police and sickness. In the Book of Revelation, Michael, “one of the chief princes”, leads the forces of God’s armies against Satan’s forces, eventually defeating Satan. Patron of grocers, mariners, paratroopers, police, and sickness.

ST STEPHEN – The first martyr of Christianity. Stoned to death outside the walls of Jerusalem for blasphemy following a long speech to a crowd of enemies and the Sanhedrin. Patron of stonemasons.

ST GEORGE – A soldier in the Roman army who confronted the Roman Emperor Diocletian for putting to death every Christian he met. For this challenge he was tortured and beheaded. Patron Saint of England and Catalonia.

BISHOP (St Felix?) – Died 648 AD. The First Bishop of East Anglia. A century after his death he was praised by the Venerable Bede for delivering “all the province of East Anglia from long-standing unrighteousness and unhappiness”.
